Frequently Asked Questions

GDS Questions

Thousands of travel businesses around the world use a GDS (Global Distribution System) to make travel arrangements. GDS enable businesses to manage all their travel requirements from one place, providing access to prices and availability of flights, hotels, car hire, rail and cruises. If you know how to use a GDS then you have a greater chance of getting ahead in your travel career.

Hundreds of jobs advertise for GDS skills.  Take a look!  Here’s a live link to the Indeed job board showing many travel jobs requiring GDS knowledge.

This is a common question and there is no correct answer. If you are based in Europe then we recommend Amadeus or Galileo. If you are based in North America then we recommend Sabre.
There is no ‘wrong’ answer. Once you know one GDS it is relatively easy to learn another GDS. It’s like learning foreign languages… If you are fluent in Spanish then learning French or Italian is much easier.

Each course has a set amount of training hours. These are hours that you can use to access the training system. Most students are able to complete the training using the hours provided with each course. If you need more hours, you can purchase these via our website. We sell extra hour packages of 5, 10 & 20 hours.

At the core of each training program is a GDS emulator. A GDS emulator is a clever system that simulates a real GDS like Galileo, Sabre or Amadeus. Emulators are programmed to accept GDS queries and generate GDS screen displays just like the real thing! As you work through the lessons, exercises, quizzes, and drills, every GDS query that you submit is handled by an emulator in order to generate a realistic screen display. Every screen display appears exactly as it would on a real GDS.

Courses are divided into modules. There are five different types of modules in each course.

  • Lesson Modules. These modules consist of easy-to-follow tutorials on how to submit GDS queries and interpret GDS screen displays. It is in these modules where new material is presented and explained. There are four to five lesson modules in every unit.
  • Exercise Modules. These modules present highly-realistic simulations of travel agency and airline work environments. Each exercise features five travel scenarios in which the student must take all the necessary steps to build a complete computerized booking. As one moves further along in their training, the exercises become progressively more difficult. For instance, the exercises near the end require flight bookings, special meal requests, rental car bookings, and hotel bookings. There is one exercise module per unit.
  • Quiz Modules. These modules are designed to test one’s comprehension of the material covered in the current unit. There is one quiz module per unit.
  • Exam Modules. These modules are designed to test one’s overall proficiency. There is one exam at the end of each course. Students in the United Kingdom may optionally submit their exam results to VIASINC for evaluation. If they pass, they may receive a certificate of completion that is recognized by IATA as being worth 10 points in the agency accreditation program.
  • Drill Modules. Some of the units have drill modules. Drill modules offer additional practice of the GDS queries taught in the lesson modules. In those units that have drill modules, there is one drill module for each lesson module.

Taking the exam

The exam is taken online. You do not need to attend a special exam centre. You simply take the exam when you are ready. Exams can last between for 1-3 hours so please ensure you have enough training time left before starting an exam. Exams are included in the course and there are no extra exam fees.

You need to get 85% or more in your final exam. If you do not pass you can simply try again, providing you have enough training hours left. Exam retakes are free of charge.

Congratulations! Once you pass, please contact us on to tell us. We’ll check and if you have passed then we will then send you a certificate in the post. Please allow for 14 day for the certificate to arrive. We will send then certificate to the address you provide in your original order. If you need the certificate sent to a different address please let us know.
